Louisiana

Two tribal nations in Louisiana, Grand Caillou/Dulac Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw and United Houma Nation, are working to recover from Hurricane Ida in August 2021—a disaster whose effects were exacerbated by generations of neglect, untruths, and extractive processes.

Convergence Partnership is supporting Grand Caillou/Dulac Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw and United Houma Nation to help fill critical resource gaps in their recovery—in large part a result of their unjust lack of federal recognition which exacerbates inequities and significantly diminishes their ability to qualify for federal aid after disasters.

With this support, tribes can return to leading other critical work focused on land rights, cultural preservation, community resettlement, canal backfilling, and coastal and wetland restoration that benefit all of Louisiana’s people.

Convergence Partnership’s support is also helping both nations focus on promoting narratives that help counter the environmental racism and harms of the petrol-chemical industry, and grow the political and public will to right-size corporate power, advance policy change, and ensure quality jobs.
